Abstract:
This invention proposes a  sensor-enabled product shelf system that plays targeted audio or video messages when a customer picks up a product, promoting it's associated warranty or protection plan.

The system aims to educate customers in real time about the benefits of the warranty, including cost savings from past use cases and failure statistics, thereby encouraging purchase decisions earlier in the shopping process and reducing time-consuming interactions at checkout.

Background:
Currently, in physical retail environments, warranties or protection plans are often promoted only at checkout. For example, store associates suggest warranties to customers purchasing electronics such as laptops or appliances, explaining how they can help with repair or replacement in case of product failure. These interactions typically take 1 to 5 minutes and can slow down busy checkout lines.

While some stores display warranty cards near the product on shelves, customers often ignore them, leading to last-minute decisions at checkout. In contrast, online retailers show warranty offers with product details and include educational material during checkout.

Description:
This disclosed system addresses these inefficiencies by creating an interactive, shelf-level solution that engages customers with audio or video content when they pick up a product for which a warranty is available. It promotes warranty value at the decision point—saving associate time and improving the customer’s informed purchasing experience.

This invention involves integrating sensors into store shelves for selected products that are eligible for protection plans or warranty add-ons.

How It Works:

  1. Each shelf containing a primary product (e.g., electronics, appliances) is equipped with:
    • A sensor to detect when the product is picked up
    • A small display (optional) for video or an audio speaker for sound-only versions

  1. When a customer picks up the product:
    • The sensor detects the interaction and triggers a signal
    • The associated warranty product module nearby begins playing an audio or video message that explains:
      • The product’s failure rate
      • Typical repair costs
      • Customer testimonials or statistics on cost savings
      • General benefits of the warranty coverage

  1. The system can optionally pull real-time or preloaded review data, product failure history, or internal recommendation ratings to personalize or contextualize the message.

  1. If the customer picks up the warranty product as well:
    • The system stops the audio/video and plays a thank-you message, ending the interaction gracefully

Benefits:

  • Informs customers about warranty options at the product selection stage
  • Reduces workload on checkout associates
  • Speeds up the purchase process, especially during peak hours
  • Increases warranty product sales with data-driven customer engagement

This implementation reduces friction at the point of sale and enhances the customer journey by offering real-time, contextual suggestions.

Enabling Technology:

  • RFID or infrared shelf sensors
  • Bluetooth/IoT-based signaling between product and warranty module
  • Small embedded video/audio playback devices with motion/sensor triggers
