Abstract:
This solution calculates how many shopping bags will be required for items either on the shopping list or added to the cart.

Background:
With stores slowly moving away from plastic bags and using either personal bags or paper bags to be more environmentally sensitive, it is getting harder to determine how many bags you need to bring with you or when checking out.  This disclosure calculates how many bags will be required for items either on the shopping list or added to the cart.

Description:
Today with grocery stores moving away from plastic bags and allowing people to use reusable bags for shopping, you are required to bring your own bags when going shopping. Most of the time, you end up with either not enough bags for all your items you shopped for or have too many bags that you must deal with when checking out, which is not ideal, as it gets in the way.

This idea is having an application on your phone that can scan your shopping list to determine how many bags will be needed, so you can prepare to bring the correct number of bags.

If the customer does not have personal reusable bags that they use, they can use store provided paper bags during checkout.  When this is the scenario, the application will track your shopping in the store, as items are put in the cart, it will determine the number of store bags required as you add items to the cart and will also give optimal bagging solution to minimize number of bags needed, as these bags must be purchased.

The process of determining number of bags required can be, but not limited to:

  • Item size
  • Item weight
  • Type of item (i.e., bread/eggs vs apples or cleaning items, as you want to bag these items separate from each other)
  • Personal data (i.e., younger person vs old, weaker person vs stronger (can limit how much you can carry/handle), type of bags used (paper or cloth).

The application can be used by anyone who does shopping, to help determine the correct number of bags required per shopping list.  It can also be used during the shopping process, if store bags are used, to give the optimal shopping experience.
